ARTISTIC APROACH
Like on a scale, for the plate of the Beautiful and the Perfect to be lifted, its counterpart must be heavier, loaded with the unfinished, the damaged, the imperfect, the incomplete, the ugly, the ambiguous. My work focuses on this counterpart, by highlighting materials and techniques on canvases that do not usually belong there.
Through an exploratory practice of textile techniques and materials such as wool and other vegetable fibers, I aim to interpret specific and diverse moments of inspiration.
I primarily use weaving, cross-stitch, and latch-hooking to create. These three techniques allow for experimentation with colors, textures, and dimensions and infinitely multiply the possibilities for creation.
The use of wool, and particularly what is called "rustic" wool, plays a dual role in my creative process. While its sensory and mechanical characteristics are crucial for the meaning of the pieces, it also has a secondary connotation that contributes indirectly: wool is not generally valued as a noble material, yet behind it lies an entire industry that, in my opinion, should be highlighted.
The use of the "canvas" support gives me a framework and a structure for creation, but as I evolve, I seek to transcend these physical limits as well as the mental limits that condition me.
BIOGRAPHY
Joana Rombo was born in 1981, near Lisbon, Portugal. In 2026, after 19 years of living in France, she moved back to Portugal.
Following literary studies in Lisbon, her professional career led her into various fields, such as international trade, logistics, and Lean management, until 2022, the year she decided to redirect her career.
In 2014, she created the project "Jangada" ("raft" in Portuguese), dedicated to exploring her lifelong latent need for manual expression. This project, which allowed her to test various plastic media and discover her creative process, would transform into two different creative universes, a few years later.
In 2022, she founded "Atelier Stofo," the name under which she creates textile art pieces. Wool is the predominant raw material, and weaving, cross-stitch, and latch-hooking are her main means of expression.
In 2024, she develops the brand "the curious popcorn," in which she combines mixed media and digital techniques to create.
Curiosity, the need to explore, and the desire to push expected norms are some of her characteristics as a creator.
